Under the heading *Prestito Nazionale di Guerra*, or National War Loan, this 1917 poster asks Italians to lend money to the state rather than to enlist or to fight. Italy had entered the First World War in May 1915, and its government raised funds through a series of such loans, presenting bond purchases as a patriotic duty for ordinary households and small savers. The subjects listed for the piece, which include public squares and national flags, reflect the common wartime pairing of civic ceremony with financial sacrifice. The poster was once held by the Rehse Archive, a German collection of materials on contemporary history, before it reached the Library of Congress.
