A color lithograph poster appeals for donations to an ambulance unit that, according to its caption, was then the only American ambulance operating in Russia. Contributions were directed to a New York office on Fifth Avenue, a reminder that the effort was run by private donors rather than by the government. The poster dates to about 1917, when Russia's armies were short of medical supplies and trained personnel, and when the country's political upheaval was making its war effort increasingly uncertain. Its plea for money reflects how American civilians were drawn into the war's medical needs well before the United States entered the fighting.
