Few wartime posters asked Americans to help a population most of them would never see, but *Refugees in Russia* does just that. Issued by the International Reconstruction League of New York, it appeals for aid to civilians uprooted by the fighting on the eastern front, where the German and Austro-Hungarian advances of 1915 drove large numbers of people from their homes. The poster probably dates to 1916 or 1917, just before the United States entered the war, when American charities were already mobilizing for Europe. Its halftone reproduction and letterpress text reflect the mix of pictorial reporting and direct solicitation common to wartime relief material.
