Built in 1915, this picture shows a tank at the earliest stage of its development, when the machine was still a secret experiment. The idea grew out of the deadlock on the Western Front, where barbed wire and machine guns had stalled infantry attacks. British engineers and officers worked to build an armored vehicle that could cross trenches and shrug off small-arms fire. The name "tank" was a wartime cover, meant to suggest water containers rather than weapons. Tanks first went into battle in September 1916, so an image from 1915 captures the machine before it proved its worth.
