Theodore Roosevelt's departure from Rio de Janeiro is the moment this glass negative captures, from his tour of South America. Roosevelt traveled through Brazil in 1913 and 1914, a journey that took him deep into the Amazon basin on the River of Doubt expedition, and his stop in the Brazilian capital drew public attention. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, produced the picture, but the title and date on the negative are unverified, so the exact day is uncertain.
