Few pictures in this collection place Theodore Roosevelt so far from Washington. According to its caption, this one shows him enjoying the view in Rio de Janeiro, where he stopped during his South American tour in late 1913. That trip came after his 1912 defeat as the Progressive Party candidate, and it took him through Brazil and beyond. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, sold images like this one to newspapers, so its glass negatives offer a useful record of such travels.
