Theodore Roosevelt appears in this glass negative at the Young Men's Christian Association in Rio de Janeiro, a stop on the South American journey he undertook after leaving the presidency. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers, made the negative, but the location and the approximate date come from caption information that has not been independently verified. Roosevelt's 1913 to 1914 trip through Brazil drew wide press attention, so pictures like this one show how the former president was presented to the public during his travels abroad.
