The armored cruiser *Vizcaya* was one of the Spanish ships lost in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba on July 3, 1898, and this view records the wreck after American gunfire struck it. Its title points to damage from 11-inch naval guns, and the crippled hull was run ashore at Acerraderos, where it remained a visible landmark. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for travel and tourist views, documented sites like this in the years after the fighting, when the wreck drew visitors curious about the battle.
