The armored cruiser *Vizcaya* was among the Spanish warships that tried to leave Santiago harbor on July 3, 1898, and the American squadron destroyed them within a few hours. The ship was run aground west of the harbor, and the defeat ended Spain's naval power in the Caribbean. This glass-plate negative, probably made after the battle, comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sold views of the American landscape and of events like this one. It captures the violence of the ship's destruction in the aftermath of the battle.
