The outline here is Yellowstone National Park as mapped in 1895, about twenty-three years after Congress set the area aside as the first national park in the United States. Boundary maps mattered because the park's edges were not always easy to see on the ground, and officials needed a clear line to decide where federal protection applied. By the mid-1890s the U.S. Army was overseeing the park, and the Yellowstone Park Protection Act of 1894 had given the government stronger tools against poaching and vandalism.
