Few American cities had as many theaters in the 1920s as Detroit, and this ink drawing shows the Shubert's Detroit Opera House on Campus Martius, the downtown square where the city's grandest playhouses clustered. The Shuberts were a major theatrical producing family, and their Detroit house hosted touring plays, musicals, and opera. The subject headings also list it among motion picture theaters, a reminder that many of these halls ran films alongside stage productions as the 1920s progressed. Drawings like this one record the building's design and planned layout, which makes them useful for understanding how such theaters were arranged for audiences and performers.
