Baltimore in 1869 was one of the country's busiest seaports, with ships moving through the Patapsco River and the harbor crowded with cargo from the Chesapeake and beyond. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, headquartered in the city, tied its wharves and warehouses to markets in the Ohio Valley, and its shops at Mount Clare employed many skilled workers. Factories in canning, clothing, tobacco, and flour milling drew workers from Germany, Ireland, and the countryside, and the city's population had grown quickly in the decades before the Civil War. The wounds of the war and the recent end of Reconstruction-era military rule still shaped local politics, with Democrats and Republicans contesting city and state offices. A bird's-eye view of the city from this period would have shown residents a place proud of its commerce, its church steeples, and its rowhouse neighborhoods.
