Baltimore in 1869 was a busy port city of roughly a quarter million people, and this bird's-eye view shows its harbor and dense streets from above. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, headquartered there, tied the city's wharves and warehouses to the interior, while the shops at Mount Clare and the depots near the harbor kept freight and workers moving. Canning, flour milling, clothing manufacture, and the oyster trade on the Chesapeake gave the city much of its income, and the rebuilt downtown was still recovering from the Civil War years. Residents knew Baltimore as a Southern-leaning border city with a German and Irish immigrant population, a strong merchant class, and a Washington Monument standing on Mount Vernon Place as its civic landmark.
