Baltimore in 1869 was a busy Chesapeake port of roughly a quarter million people, and the bird's-eye view shows its harbor, rail yards, and dense rowhouse streets. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, headquartered in the city, tied the port to the Ohio Valley and drew grain, coal, and tobacco to its piers. Canning houses, clothing shops, iron works, and flour mills employed many workers, while oystermen and shipbuilders kept the waterfront active. Residents still spoke of the 1861 Pratt Street riot and the divided loyalties of the Civil War years, and the city was rebuilding its political life after the war. Parks such as Druid Hill, laid out on the city's northwest edge, were newly popular places for Sunday outings.
