Baltimore in 1869 was a busy Chesapeake port of roughly 270,000 people, with its economy built on shipping, flour milling, canning, and clothing manufacture. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, headquartered in the city, moved coal and grain from western Maryland and the Ohio Valley to tidewater wharves, and its shops and freight yards stretched along the western edge of downtown. Schooners, steamers, and oyster boats crowded the harbor at Fells Point and the Inner Harbor. Only a few years after the Civil War, the city was still working through its divided loyalties, and its newspapers, churches, and fraternal lodges shaped civic life.
