Baltimore, Maryland, in 1869 was a busy port city of roughly a quarter million people, still recovering from the Civil War and the divisions it had opened in a border city. Its harbor carried grain, tobacco, and canned oysters, and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, with its headquarters and shops in the city, tied the port to the interior of the country. Factories for clothing, iron, and food processing lined the waterfront and the rail yards, and shipyards at Fells Point and Locust Point kept men at work. Residents knew their city as a commercial center proud of its cultural institutions, including the Peabody Institute, which had opened its library the year before.
