A nude boy stands with his arms raised against a rocky landscape, and the pose turns the figure into a study of line set against open ground. The print is a platinum print, a process photographers prized around 1906 for its soft tonal range and matte surface, and the red monogram on its face identifies the maker only by initials. The picture is part of the Louise Imogen Guiney Collection at the Library of Congress, named for the Boston poet and essayist. Outdoor figure studies of young men and boys were common in this period, often drawing on classical ideas of the body in nature.
