The inscription in the upper left corner, "Æ 46 1610," gives the sitter's age as 46 in 1610, which matches Shakespeare's age that year. The painting this print reproduces is attributed to Cornelius Jansen, a painter of Dutch descent working in London in the early 1600s, though the attribution and the date are uncertain. Charles Turner, the engraver named in the title, was one of the leading mezzotint engravers of his time, and his soft tonal work suits the deep shadows of the original. The print belongs to the early nineteenth-century taste for images of Shakespeare as England's national poet.
