This engraving turns to the wedding scene in Act III, Scene II of Shakespeare's *The Taming of the Shrew*, where Petruchio's unruly courtship of Katharina reaches its climax. Francis Wheatly, a Royal Academician, painted the original, and the engraver I. P. Simon translated it into a print. It was published in London in 1795 by John and Josiah Boydell, whose Shakespeare Gallery commissioned paintings from leading British artists and had them engraved for a lavishly illustrated edition of the plays. The series was meant to elevate Shakespeare into a national art subject, and this print shows how painters of the period staged the plays' theatrical moments for an audience of readers and collectors.
