This photogravure shows the American tragedian Edwin Forrest in the title role of *King Lear*, specifically in Act IV, Scene VI, the scene in which the broken king wanders in madness near Dover. Forrest (1806-1872) was one of the most celebrated stage actors of the nineteenth century, known for a muscular, emotionally direct style that audiences in America embraced. His rivalry with the English actor William Charles Macready culminated in the deadly Astor Place Riot of 1849 in New York. Because Forrest died in 1872, this c1897 print is a later reproduction, made when his reputation was being revived in collections of theatrical portraits.
