The Index of American Design was a Federal Art Project initiative, launched in 1935 under the Works Progress Administration, that set out to document decorative arts, folk crafts and everyday objects from across the country. This silkscreen poster from 1936 promotes an exhibition of that material in Illinois, and its subject list pairs art exhibitions with textiles, a reminder of how much of the project's effort went into cataloguing fabrics, furniture and household wares. The Federal Art Project hired artists to make watercolor records of these objects, and the poster's bold color blocks reflect the screen-printing techniques the WPA poster units used to publicize such events.
