A portrait of an unidentified man, made in 1844, belongs to the earliest years of photography, when the daguerreotype was just a few years old. Daguerreotypes were positive images on polished silver-coated copper plates, and each one was a unique object rather than a print that could be copied. Sitters in this period often had to hold still for several minutes in bright light, which explains the serious, unsmiling expressions common to portraits of the era. Because the sitter is unnamed, the picture is valued mainly for its clothing, pose and the way it records how ordinary people chose to present themselves at the very start of the medium.
