Nothing in the record names the sitter, and the title breaks off after the word "about," so he remains an unidentified man whose likeness was fixed on a silvered copper plate in 1844. That places the portrait in photography's first decade, just a few years after Louis Daguerre introduced his process in Paris in 1839. Early exposures could take several seconds to minutes in good light, so sitters had to hold very still, often with a hidden head support out of the frame. Many daguerreotypes like this one survive without names, yet they remain valuable records of how ordinary people dressed and posed for the camera in the earliest years of photography.
