A sitter whose name has been lost to time looks out from this daguerreotype, made around 1844, when the process was barely five years old. Daguerreotypes were unique positives on silvered copper plates, so each one is a single object rather than a print that could be reproduced, and their mirror-like surfaces must be viewed at an angle to reveal the image. Portraits of this period required sitters to hold still for several seconds or longer in bright light, which explains the composed, unsmiling expressions common to images from these years.
