A sitter whose name has been lost to time looks out from this daguerreotype, made around 1844, when the process was barely five years old. Daguerreotypes were unique positives on silvered copper plates, so each one is a single object rather than a print that could be copied. Portraits from this period required sitters to hold still for several minutes in strong light, which explains the serious, unsmiling expressions common to images of the era. Because the process was costly, those who sat for such portraits were often people of some means, and the surviving plates offer a rare, direct view of their faces and dress.
