A sitter whose name has been lost stares out from this daguerreotype made around 1844, one of the earliest years the process was widely practiced in America. Daguerreotypes were positive images fixed on silvered copper plates, so each one is a unique object rather than a print, and its surface shows a mirror-like sheen that shifts with the angle of light. Portraits of this kind required the subject to sit motionless for several seconds to a minute or more in bright daylight, which explains the serious, unsmiling expressions common to the era. Because the sitter is unidentified, the picture is valued as a record of dress, grooming and studio style from the mid-1840s.
