Little is recorded about the sitter, who remains unidentified, but the plate itself tells a good deal about the early years of photography. Made around 1844, a daguerreotype is a one-of-a-kind image fixed directly on a silvered copper plate, so the portrait exists as a single object rather than a print that could be copied. Exposures in this period often ran for several minutes, which required sitters to hold still and explains the serious expressions common to portraits of the time. Viewed at an angle, the surface shifts between a positive image and a mirror-like reflection.
