A daguerreotype from 1844 shows a man whose name has been lost, and that absence is part of what makes the plate worth a look. Daguerreotypes were positive images made on silver-coated copper, each one a unique object with a mirror-like surface that shifts with the viewing angle. By the mid-1840s, the process had been public for only a few years, and portraits like this one were often sat for in studios by people who were making their first experience with photography. Because the sitter is unidentified, the image rests on its material qualities and the period's portrait conventions rather than on a known life story.
