Here the subject is the façade of the Temple of Jupiter at Baalbek, in the Bekaa Valley of present-day Lebanon, where Roman builders raised one of the largest sanctuaries in the empire. Its towering podium and the six columns still standing above it make the ruins among the most striking remains of Roman religious architecture. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that distributed news photographs in the early twentieth century. The record gives no firm date, so the exact moment of exposure is unknown.
