Beyrout, the Ottoman-era port city now known as Beirut, is the subject named in this glass negative's title, though the record gives no date and the title itself comes from caption data the Bain News Service attached to its negatives, which was not independently verified. The image belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, a body of roughly 40,000 negatives made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news pictures from the early 1900s through the 1920s. Beirut was a busy Mediterranean harbor and a center of trade and missionary schools in that period, so the view likely reflects the city's waterfront and street life of that era, but the picture itself should be examined before drawing conclusions about its specific scene.
