This glass negative shows the town the Library of Congress records as Nabulus, the modern name for the biblical Shechem, set in a narrow valley between Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal. The Bain News Service, a New York press agency that supplied news photographs in the early 1900s, made the picture, though the record gives no date and the place name comes from unverified caption information. Shechem appears in the Hebrew Bible, and the valley has been inhabited for thousands of years, so the scene reflects a town with a long documented past.
