Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied newspapers with news photographs in the early 1900s, made this glass negative, and the title "Guy E. Tripp" comes from caption cards and negative data that the Library of Congress has not verified. The record gives no date, so the sitter's identity and the occasion of the portrait remain open questions. Bain's files hold many studio and news portraits of businessmen, politicians and public figures from the period, and researchers often use the caption cards and the surrounding negatives to narrow down who is pictured and when the photograph was taken.
