This glass negative shows a foundation at Baalbek, the Roman-era religious complex in the Bekaa Valley of present-day Lebanon, where the stone bases of the large temples still stand above the surrounding ground. The title comes from the Bain News Service caption, which the Library of Congress lists as unverified, and the great sanctuary there is more often associated with Jupiter than with the Sun. Bain's agency sent photographers to document places like this for newspaper readers in the early twentieth century, when the ruins drew wide interest. The massive, carefully fitted blocks of the substructure are the feature most worth looking at.
