Mabel Dwight's lithograph *Barnyard* turns an ordinary farmyard into a close look at the chickens and daily routines that filled rural life. Dwight, an American printmaker, made it in 1939 under the Federal Art Project, the New Deal program that employed artists during the Depression and gave printmaking a major role. Signed in pencil by the artist, the print reflects the decade's wide interest in farm life, at a time when many American families still depended on small farms even as machines were beginning to change how the work was done.
