Published in the May 19, 1923 issue of *Judge*, this print collects sketches by cartoonist Johan Bull that poke fun at dance marathons, the endurance contests in which couples shuffled around a floor for hours or days in hopes of winning prize money. Such marathons drew large crowds in the early 1920s, and humor magazines like *Judge* seized on their exhaustion, staged romances, and carnival atmosphere. The drawings are worth a closer look for the way they capture the strained smiles and sagging posture of contestants who were pushed to their limits for the entertainment of spectators.
