Taken in June 1900, this portrait of Theodore Roosevelt, numbered "No. 2" in its title, dates from the weeks when he had just been chosen as William McKinley's running mate for vice president while still serving as governor of New York. Roosevelt had already become a national figure through his service in the Spanish-American War and his leadership of the Rough Riders, and studio portraits like this one were widely reproduced as his fame grew. The print was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which is one reason such images survive in the Library of Congress collections today.
