The only name attached to this glass negative is Pete White, a title the Library of Congress notes as unverified and taken from the Bain News Service's own labels. The Bain agency, begun in New York by George Grantham Bain around 1899, supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its plates reflect the quick, practical work of commercial press photography. With no date or further caption, the picture is best understood through that setting: a working news operation producing portraits and events for daily papers. The small format and glass base are typical of the period's press work.
