This glass negative pairs the American soprano Rosa Ponselle with a woman identified only as Anna Ryan, a portrait that stands apart from the many single-subject views in the collection. Ponselle, born in Meriden, Connecticut, rose quickly to fame at the Metropolitan Opera after her debut there in 1918, and press photographs of performers of her stature were in steady demand. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied images to newspapers in the early twentieth century, made the negative, though the sitting's date and Ryan's role remain unrecorded.
