Rosa Ponselle, the American soprano, is the subject of this glass negative, one of the many portraits the Bain News Service produced of performers and public figures in the early twentieth century. Ponselle rose to fame at the Metropolitan Opera in New York during the 1920s, where she was celebrated for her powerful voice and her partnership with her sister Ada and tenor Enrico Caruso. The Bain collection, held by the Library of Congress, preserves thousands of such glass negatives, which give a useful picture of how news photographers documented stage and concert personalities of the period. The record does not give a date for this particular negative, so its exact year is unverified.
