The only identifying word for this negative is the title "Ware," which the Bain News Service noted on its caption cards and which the Library of Congress lists as unverified, so the subject itself remains uncertain. George Grantham Bain founded his news photo agency in New York in the early 1900s to supply pictures to newspapers and magazines, and its glass negatives, usually 5 by 7 inches or smaller, were made for quick reproduction in print. The collection preserves the working output of a commercial press photographer, with subjects ranging from public figures and current events to everyday street and commercial scenes. Viewers should treat the title as a starting clue rather than a firm account of what the camera recorded.
