Four names set this glass negative apart: Tyroler, Prilik, Ponselle and Romani. The Bain News Service caption cards suggest a group of singers or performers, and the best-known name, Rosa Ponselle, was a leading American soprano who joined the Metropolitan Opera in 1918. The record does not confirm the identities, the occasion or the exact date, so the names are best treated as the photographer's notes rather than verified facts. Bain's studio, which sent pictures of theater, opera, politics and daily life to newspapers, worked mostly in the 1900s through the 1920s, when such portraits were used to illustrate stage news.
