The only identifying detail in this record is the title "Diaz," which the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its caption card. The library notes that the title has not been verified, so the subject remains uncertain. The picture survives as a glass negative no larger than 5 by 7 inches, one of many the New York agency, founded by George Grantham Bain in 1899, produced for newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. Glass plates like this were the standard working medium for press photographers of that era, and the collection as a whole records news events, public figures and everyday scenes.
