Titled simply *Canned goods*, this glass negative is a plain, everyday subject, though the record gives no date and the title comes from unverified notes on the negative or its caption card. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the body of news pictures made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that George Grantham Bain founded around 1899 to supply newspapers with photographs of current events. Its plates were made to be reproduced quickly in print, so pictures like this one often show ordinary commercial life rather than posed portraits. Glass negatives of this period preserve fine detail, which makes them useful records of how goods and daily routines looked in the early twentieth century.
