A. Megerlin is posed with a violin in this portrait, identified only by an initial and surname taken from caption information the Bain News Service recorded with the negative, which the Library of Congress notes has not been verified. The Bain News Service was a New York photo agency founded by George Grantham Bain around 1899 that supplied pictures of people and events to newspapers, so its glass negatives document the early twentieth-century trade in news photographs. Because the record gives no date, the portrait is best understood within that setting, when studio images of performers and public figures were widely used in print.
