Julia Culp was a Dutch contralto whose recitals drew large audiences in Europe and America in the years before and after World War I, and this glass negative is one of the many portraits the Bain News Service made of concert performers and public figures. Bain was a New York news photography agency that sold images to newspapers, and its pictures were captioned on cards that often carried unverified information, so the name here comes from those notes rather than a confirmed date. The collection as a whole gives a useful picture of how musical celebrities were marketed to the press in the early twentieth century.
