A portrait of Miss Katherine Houston, dated November 15, 1929, exists here as a glass negative, a format prized for sharp detail but easily damaged. The title comes from data written by the National Photo Company, the Washington, D.C., studio whose working files were later given to the Library of Congress. The record says nothing more about the sitter, so the link to the Houston board rests on the name alone. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect natural deterioration of the original coating, which is common in negatives of this age.
