Eleanor Roosevelt is pictured here with members of the British royal family in the Bow Room at Buckingham Palace, a setting that places the photograph inside one of London's most formal state residences. The picture dates to 1942, when Britain was deep into the Second World War and the United States had only recently entered the conflict. Mrs. Roosevelt visited Britain that year on a trip that drew wide press attention, and images like this one carried the message of Anglo-American solidarity to American audiences. The Bow Room, a space within the palace used for receptions and official gatherings, gives the scene its ceremonial character.
