The shout in the title, "E-e-e-yah-yip," sets this poster apart: it turns a battle cry into a recruiting pitch, promising that a man who enlists will go over the top with the Marines. Printed in 1917, shortly after the United States entered the war in April, it belongs to the wave of American recruiting posters that appealed to young men's sense of adventure and duty. The Marine Corps grew rapidly during the war, and images of rifles and bayonets like these were meant to present the service as a fast track to combat.
