Its title is a sound rather than a slogan: "E-e-e-yah-yip" reads like a shouted call to the men being recruited, and "Go over with U.S. Marines" links it to the phrase "going over the top" that described attacks on the Western Front. Printed in 1917, the year the United States entered the war, the color lithograph includes rifles and bayonets, the weapons that defined infantry fighting there. The Marine Corps was expanding quickly during these months, and posters like this one were a major tool for drawing men into its ranks.
