This photograph shows the attendants at the quarters of the Prince de Joinville, the French naval officer who spent time observing the Union army during the Peninsula Campaign, and it is dated May 3, 1862, the day Confederate forces began pulling out of Yorktown, Virginia. The image captures the domestic side of a military camp, where the staff who cooked, cleaned, and tended horses kept a visiting dignitary's household running near the front. Such scenes are rare in Civil War photography, which usually focused on soldiers, and they offer a useful view of the labor that supported officers and guests. The record does not name the individuals pictured.
